How Do I Create a QR Code for My Website?

Enter your web address into a website address generator, select static or dynamic, and download the paper copy to verify it. A static code is never going to cost anything anywhere, and will never expire–a perfect match for an address that doesn’t move. If you plan to rebuild your site at the same domain or change to another domain, or you want to find out how many people scanned the site, select dynamic. The QR Code Generator is free, supporting an unlimited number of codes of types static and dynamic—the page states they never expire.

Most guides jump right to the generator, so many different site codes are either dynamic where they should have been and static when they should have been. It should take about 30 seconds to decide which one to choose, dictating whether it will cost you anything, if it will make you change it down the road, and, crucially, if anyone ever knows if it’s working or not.

This guide does that first, then it explains the “build” you have to point at (which should be you), and the last step, the one step you don’t expect to find the error at (the point of failure).

The decision that comes before the code

There are two types of QR code and they cannot be interchanged. The difference is that they have different physical addresses for their web as it’s the technical details and a make-it-or-break-it moment.

In a static code the address is written into the pattern of black and white squares, following the published specification for the symbology No server sits behind it, no account owns it, and no subscription keeps it alive. It also cannot be changed, because changing the address would change the pattern.

Instead, a dynamic code is in the middleware, which the provider’s server translates to the actual address when people scan. You can check with the provider as many times as you want, and will see that the scans are still being counted on the way.

As the QR Code Generator points out, if the content is a true permanent aspect, stick with a static code, and if the site is dynamic, well, you could want to print paks or test their performance or correct an error, without reprinting, to name just a few scenarios.

The one thing that they can’t do is turn into each other. The same page admits that a dynamic code cannot be converted to static code, and vice versa, has a dedicated line declaring so: “A dynamic code cannot be converted to static code, and vice versa, because they store their information in fundamentally different places. Before it gets away from you, resolve that issue so that once finished, there’s no remedy but a reprint of the art, if available.

When static is the right answer for your website

It gets a lot more credit than it’s shoehorned into getting and it’s often right in plain, old, web code.

Your domain name is likely the most consistent asset that you have in your business. Businesses make modifications to their sites regularly, and switch domains pretty rarely; a static code that’s linked to your site’s root domain continues to operate no matter what alterations you make to your site, as the address for your site never changes. Behind it, the pages moved and in front, the door not.

These three tools are all free, and you don’t have to create an account on two of them, plus no expiration date on static. Nothing expires. It can’t be taken down by any company closure or plan lapses. A code for a shop window, a van, the business card or a brochure that concludes with your home page, those properties are of more value than scan analytics.

The only honest drawback is that you never will be sure if somebody has scanned it. If you don’t like it, read on in the next section before you commit.

When you need dynamic instead

If you don’t fall into any of these four categories, save your money, but if you do, then dynamic is the answer.

They may be able to switch domains. Any renaming, merging or relocation from one address to another turns all static code that resolves to a dead site. It is by far the biggest reason for dynamic it is more for younger businesses than established.

The code is pointing to a campaign and not the home page. Seasonal change over of campaign pages and a dynamic code to alternate the same printed image to different offers in each season.

Knowing it works, of course, is required. It is only through scan counting that one can tell if a placement deserves the space. Without a code on a window that anyone scans, there is not any code you realize about and there will never be one that tells you.

The cost of the re-printing the artwork is high. Yes, vehicle livery, exhibition stands, printed packaging and engraved signage all make the case for dynamic, a costly error, but a redirect is a cheap insurance policy.

If you only want to put a code on a flyer to put on your browser homepage then it’s better and it’s everywhere for free.

Three tools worth knowing

Chosen for what they give you without payment, since a website code should not need a subscription.

The QR Code Generator will process both, but it doesn’t ask for any payment for either. Its generator allows you to create static codes for every category with no limit, plus the dynamic QR codes are available for life for free, termed as never expiring from its dynamic QR Code page. No scan cap is even mentioned on any of its free terms that it is published as, because when a placement begins to work a pooled scan allowance is where free dynamic codes typically end up dying.

An advertising piece does show up prior to your website showing up on the complimentary dynamic codes, and everything that is actually downloaded without charges comes watermarked. Both provide monthly subscription fees based on a number of codes edited, and not on a single number and are listed separately on Flex and separately on the yearly subscription: Five edited codes = $5/month, 45 edited codes = $10/month. History is 60 day at both levels. There are two problems with that page for readers. It reveals at the beginning with the forty five option selected, which means you have the larger number before you – and then calculates the currency you’re working in based on where you are, dismissing any idea that you can alter it.

Compliance is published rather than hidden behind a sales call, covering SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and GDPR, alongside a 4.8 out of 5 rating on G2 and a claimed 4 million users. That combination is unusual at the free end of this market and occasionally matters to whoever signs off your artwork.

QR Code Prime’s ten free codes suits anyone wanting more editable codes without advertising in the way. Ten dynamic QR Codes come free for life and never expire there, nothing advertises itself on the redirect, no watermark lands on any code, and a card is never requested. Reporting on each one covers how many scanned, roughly where from and on what, at no charge.

Three output formats are available without signing in, namely PNG, SVG and PDF, and the static side needs no login whatsoever. Somebody who simply wants a website code, no advertising and no account will get there faster here than anywhere else in this comparison.

QRCodeChimp matches that count of ten editable codes without charge, subject to one condition you should measure against your expected footfall. Everything on a free account draws from a shared allowance of a thousand scans monthly, and images come out no larger than 1024 pixels square, so any large-format printing pushes you onto a paid tier.

Which page should the code point at?

This determines your outcome more than the tool and most people’s answer is the default choice- their home page.

Take people to the place the product is being sold. The goal of a poster promoting a service is to display the promoting service, and not a home page where the interested person will have to look for the specified service. For any additional tap from the scan to the content, a portion of the people who scanned the texts will drop.

Test that said page on a cell phone prior to encoding it. A slow page or one that opens a cookie banner over the content, or one that was set for a desktop width width will undo all of the efforts that the code made. Scans overwhelmingly comes in on mobile 85% of the time on the Mobile data network and not WiFi.

If you are running a website analytics programme, include tracking numbers in the address to achieve the effects of labelled traffic instead of grouped traffic. This is cost-free, and allows to go from “guesses code is functioning” to “the numbers I am getting from the code are correct.”

Do not point to a page that you do not have access to. Access via a third-party listing or a social profile or marketplace page is the determination of someone else whether your code continues to function.

Making the code

Open up the generator and choose the URL type; it is the correct one to choose for any website address.

If you click on the shortened URL you used to say out loud, it will take you to the login page rather than the page you’re looking for.If you click the shortened one you normally say to yourself out loud (not the one with the https), it will bring you to the login page! When the artwork gets into circulation, it is never enjoyable to have to debug an address that cannot be resolved on some single scanning device because it comes up an invalid address on others if it’s built with that prefix.

Carefully select static or dynamic; don’t just let the tool choose. Dynamic does need an account since the provider must keep a mapping between the code and your destination. Most of these tools don’t need anything of that type.

On first sight the three rules that are important are contrast, logo size and margin. So the pattern should be dark on the lighter surface, and not the other way as codes may not work on a good percentage of phones. Always leave the three large corners blank – it helps a reader know which way round the code is placed. And always let the reader look at any logo in the middle – make it small and in the middle. The symbology itself has built in resilience and DENSO WAVE figures they are able to recover about seven percent of codewords, about fifteen percent of M, about twenty-five percent of Q and about thirty percent of H. A stewardship mark in the middle uses but a small part of the allowable mark for even the lowest level.

The one thing that the most people violate when designing rules is the margin. This clear border around the pattern is actually part of the code, and making it paler and cropping it up a bit to create a neat layout is a fairly common failure on artwork with the perfect look.

Print at any size: SVG. Print small: PNG. To enlarge a PNG for poster use, expand it to a size that it softens the edge, and it will then be rejected by scanners.

Sizing it for the place it will live

Always work backwards from the reading/distance and not from the surface.

If they are to be divided by 10, then divide them, and you will have something that is more than good serviceable; a symbol needs roughly 10 centimetres of face space when read from a metre away. An example of something held at thirty centimetres remains in a nice size at two centimeters. Three metres out is window glass read that requires almost an arm’s length – much more space than a layout typically sets aside for window glass.

Create a single proof at the actual scale, tape it exactly where the finished code would be fixed, and scan it from the customer’s standing position! This one test takes minutes, and it will detect nearly everything.

Testing before you commit

Read the printed proof with the built-in camera and also with an Android handset, just as almost everyone does. Read printed proof from the built-in camera and off an Android handset as well (make sure you do not count on a downloaded application as that is used by very few people).

Taste on mobile data as well as WiFi. It is the first thing a dynamic code must get to the provider’s server before it can be displayed differently on a weak signal than a static code.

Watch how much time it takes your page to get up after the scan registers, since after a few seconds people will become impatient in the street; this isn’t a problem with your code, it’s a problem with your site.

Take a scan of it from the physical distance and physical lighting. Codes work on a desk but not on glass, gloss laminate, and direct sunlight.

Set a reminder next month in the calendar to review it again in a month. The sites are rebuilt, pages are renamed, and a code that is just silently navigating at a non-existent page is worse than no code at all.

The weakest link in the system. The vulnerability that no computer program considers..

The threat nobody designs around

Stickers are the attack, and they are low effort. A public service announcement from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center sets out how criminals paste a substitute symbol over a real one so that scanners land somewhere engineered to harvest logins or card numbers. Unattended public display is the condition that makes it possible, and a sticker in a shop window may be the softest target of the lot.

There are no codes or protections available against this type of attack. Dynamic code lets one get a quicker response since one dictates where the call goes and can redirect it if anyone heeds one’s call, as soon as they are told where to go; a static code produces a reprint. In either case, the actual defense remains one that is physical instead of technological. Today and tomorrow, walk past your own codes, and try to scan them to find where they are.

Common mistakes with website QR codes

Choosing dynamic for a homepage that has not moved in a decade spends an allowance on a destination that was never going to change.

Choosing static for a site about to be rebuilt on a new domain creates a code that will be dead within the year.

Pointing everything at the homepage wastes the specificity that made somebody scan in the first place.

Omitting the https prefix produces a code that works on your phone and fails on somebody else’s.

Cropping the quiet zone makes a technically perfect code unreadable, and it happens at the design stage where nobody is testing anything.

Never rescanning the code after launch is how businesses discover, months later, that a site migration broke every printed code they own.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a QR code for my website?

Open a QR code generator, choose the URL type, paste your full web address including https, then decide between static and dynamic before downloading. Static is free everywhere and permanent but cannot be edited. Dynamic can be repointed later and reports scan counts. Test the printed version on two phones before producing more.

Is a website QR code free?

Yes. Static codes are free and unlimited on every tool covered here, and several require no account. Free dynamic codes exist too, with The QR Code Generator offering two it states never expire and QR Code Prime offering ten free for life, so paying is only necessary once you need more codes or want the advertising removed.

Should a website QR code be static or dynamic?

Static if the address is stable, which for a root domain it usually is, because static costs nothing and cannot be switched off by anybody. Dynamic if you might change domain, want to point the code at campaign pages that get replaced, or need to know how many people scanned it.

Can I change where my website QR code points?

Only when the code is a dynamic one. A dynamic code stores a redirect that you edit from your dashboard, which updates every printed copy of it at the same moment. A static code holds the address inside the printed pattern, and changing it means a new code and a new print run.

Do website QR codes expire?

Static codes do not, because nothing has to stay running for them to work. Dynamic codes last as long as the provider keeps the redirect alive, which varies enormously. The QR Code Generator states its two free dynamic codes never expire and QR Code Prime gives ten free for life, while other tools tie free dynamic codes to a trial.

Should the code point at my homepage?

Usually it should not. Point the code at whichever page matches the thing that prompted somebody to scan, because a homepage asks that visitor to go searching and a meaningful share of them will not bother. The homepage is the right destination only when the code is promoting the business in general rather than anything specific.

How big should a website QR code be?

Roughly a tenth of the distance it will be read from. Around ten centimetres for something read at a metre, and closer to thirty for a window code read from the pavement. Print a proof at the real size, put it where the finished code will go, and scan it from where a customer would stand.

Why does my website QR code not work?

The usual causes, in order, are a missing https prefix, a cropped margin around the pattern, insufficient contrast between the code and its background, a code printed too small for its reading distance, and a destination page that has since moved. Work through them in that order and the fault is nearly always among the first three.
